Gene dosage and manic-behavior

Duplication of a single gene causes mice to have seizures and display manic-like behaviour. But valproate, an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug commonly used to treat bipolar disorder and epilepsy can reversed the symptoms. This suggests valproate can also help some people with hyperactivity who do not respond to common treatments.

Ritalin is most often prescribed to suffers of ADHD. But a handful of students in Singapore are also using it as a "brain booster" to give them an edge over their competitors.
